Lions coach Dan Campbell said last week the team has would support wide receiver Jameson Williams after serving a two-game suspension for a performance-enhancing drug violation and sent another message of support to Williams on Wednesday.
Williams is opposite an accusation for carrying a concealed weapon after a handgun was found during a traffic stop earlier this month. Williams was released without arrest or citation during the stop, and the Detroit Police Department is investigating why that happened.
The Lions said Williams informed them of the incident, and Campbell said the same thing at the start of the press conference. Campbell admitted that it “definitely doesn’t look good” but Williams is “good” because he’s been open with the team. Campbell was then asked if he thought Williams, who is also banned in 2023 and could now face another suspension, was aware of how quickly his career could end with his ongoing off-field issues.
“I think he does,” Campbell said. “I think he realizes that more as time goes on and I think he does too. For me, I judge people by what is in their hearts. I know what this kid is made of and he’s worth hanging with. He will learn from this, he will grow up, he will be better for all this.”
Williams is serving the second game of his PED suspension this week, so the Lions will be without him as they try to beat the Packers.
