19 News Director of Engineering and Technology Dan Slentz warns that many antennas for sale make numerous false claims.

“Antennas that say ‘4K’ are just throwing words around,” Slentz said. “Whether it’s standard def, HD, 4K or even 8K, no antenna cares what the ‘RF’ (radio frequency) carries!”

Stay away from any antenna that claims to pick up cable or streaming platforms. These options are never broadcast.

Some antennas can be installed directly by your TV, but may not provide the best results.

“The thing about TV (like FM) is that altitude and being outdoors is the best possible scenario for reception. The higher you can hold the antenna, the better off you will be,” Slentz said.

“Towers near houses and chimneys are often the most likely. Roof mounts do work, but many people don’t want to install such things on their roofs. A reasonable alternative is to place the antenna in the attic of a two-story building or higher.”
